IOWA CITY, Iowa - Hundreds of Iowa City West High School students poured into the school courtyard to rally against the proposed teacher cuts to the school district.

“Both of my brothers are still in the school district, and I want them to have the same opportunities that I had,” said Izaak Sunleaf, one of the event organizers.

Sunleaf, along with three other event organizers, video taped the crowd chant “It matters to us.” Now the high school senior plans to post the video online, so it can be sent to the local and state leaders.

“We don’t want be in class rooms that have 45 people,” said Kaleigh Steege, who attended the rally.

Parents are also speaking out about the proposed cut of 22 teaching positions district wide.

“Education is everything, because it’s the future, it solves all of our problems into the future, to cut education is not looking down the line at all,” said Jill Ross, who’s son Paul is a sophomore at West.

The school board will meet this Tuesday at 6 p.m., many parents and teachers are expected to attend the meeting. Superintendent Stephen Murley is expected to finalize the cuts before April 30th.
