Iowa City Police Investigate Release of Koeppel Crash VideoBy Dave Franzman, KCRG-TV9
IOWA CITY, Iowa - A police video of Iowa football player Josh Koeppel’s motorcycle accident Monday was making the rounds on the Web Wednesday.
But the viral video that appeared sometime Tuesday night on YouTube and Hawkeye message boards was not released with the permission of Iowa City police. Police Spokesperson Sgt. Denise Brotherton said Iowa City police will launch an internal investigation to determine how this dashboard video wound up on various Web sites. Koeppel was westbound on Burlington Street on his motorcycle at about 7:30 a.m. Monday. When he crossed Gilbert Street, a pickup truck turned in front of him. The impact threw the senior offensive lineman from his motorcycle. Iowa City police on Wednesday released an official portion of the accident captured by an officer’s dashboard camera. The officer was stopped at a traffic light when the accident happened in front of him. Brotherton said police are trained to trigger the video system when something happens in front of their squad car. The camera system automatically backs up 20 seconds to record something that just happened. That’s how the camera was able to record the accident itself. Brotherton said it’s very rare for officers to actually capture something as dramatic as the Iowa football player’s crash. While police did released an official video of what actually happened, the department will investigate how a small portion of that video made it to the Web prematurely (here). Police did not know about the Web version of their video until early Wednesday. Such video released without without permission is a violation of department policy, Brotherton said. Any officer involved in its unauthorized release could face department sanctions. Watch full version of video, released to media later on Wednesday by police: More Good Stuff |
