Iowa City Man Accused of Doing, Keeping Drugs Around Children

IOWA CITY, Iowa - A 40-year-old Iowa City man is facing drug and child endangerment charges after police reported finding narcotics, drug paraphernalia and residue in the home he and his wife share with their three young children.

Michael Robert Uhler was booked into the Johnson County Jail about 4:30 a.m. Thursday after police received a tip in February that he and his wife were doing drugs and keeping drugs around their three small children, according to a criminal complaint.

Investigators with the Iowa City Police Department and the Department of Corrections' High Risk Unit contacted Uhler at his home and reported finding narcotics mostly marijuana and cocaine inside the residence.

They also found pipes, a scale and items with drug residue, including pop cans that he said he used to help him ingest cocaine, police reported.

"The defendant said those pop cans had been in the basement for two years," according to the complaint.

White powder residue, which tested positive as cocaine, was found in the home's TV wall cutout, according to police.

In the police reports, officers refer to Uhler's wife as his co-defendant, although a complaint for her arrest wasn't made public Thursday morning. Her name wasn't immediately known.

The couple has three children, ages 4, 5 and 7, according to police. The Department of Human Services removed them from the home back in February, according to the complaints. None of the children were physically injured, police reported.

Uhler faces a charge of possession of a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance second offense, and three charges of child endangerment without injury. He is being held in the Johnson County Jail this morning on a $10,000 cash-only bond.

He has a lengthy criminal history in Iowa, including two drunken driving convictions, assault causing bodily injury and other drug and theft convictions.
