Iowa City Public Library Considering Sleeping Ban

IOWA CITY, Iowa - The Iowa City Public Library is considering a ban on sleeping. Sleeping patrons make some guests feel uncomfortable and have caused some concerns in recent months, Library Director Susan Craig said.

"Everyday there is a person or two sleeping here in the building," said Craig.

The Library Board of Trustees will consider the recommendation made by library staff later this month. If they decide to act, sleeping in the library could be banned by the end of the month.

Some members of Iowa City's homeless community have said it's an unfair attack, but Craig said the ban will be enforced across the board.

The Board of Trustees considered a sleeping ban in 2001, but decided not to act.

"Homeless, or the people looking like garbage, are going to get kicked-out first over the guy in the three piece suit," said Nate, a member of Iowa City's self-described "outdoor camping community." Nate did not give his last name.
