IOWA CITY – A group trying to stop the construction of a 20-story building in downtown Iowa City will hold two public meetings in the coming days to try to further their efforts.

Project opponents going as the Iowa Coalition Against the Shadow will meet at 7 p.m. March 26 at the Iowa City Public Library, 123 S. Linn St.. They will discuss how three members of the group have filed an application with the city of Iowa City to get the city-owned property, on the northeast corner of College and Gilbert streets, rezoned to a classification that would prevent the building from going up.

The group also will meet at the development site at 4:45 p.m. April 1.
Developer Marc Moen has proposed a $53.8 million building up to 20 stories tall that he’s calling The Chauncey. The city and Moen are currently in negotiations over the project.

Critics object to the building’s size, the $13.45 million in city financial assistance Moen says it will need and that it does not include New Pioneer Co-op, like the other finalists for the site.
