Iowa City Can't Find Storage For Ped Mall Carts, TV's
IOWA CITY, Iowa Officials in Iowa City say they can't find anyone willing to provide storage for items belonging to people without adequate housing. This week Assistant City Manager Geoff Fruin said in a memo that of the 36 faith based and non-profit organizations the city has contacted for help, no one has "officially" replied.
This issue stems from a series of downtown ordinances passed by the city council last year, including a ban on personal storage on the pedestrian mall. Last summer the city dealt with the storage of shopping carts and television sets on the ped mall.
The rules apply to everyone, but many homeless people have said they are aimed at them.
Fruin had hoped an organization would be willing to provide storage of these items, and others, at no cost. The city faced issues finding a location with space, lockers and other necessary items.
Fruin has recommended the city scrap the idea for now.
