Iowa City Building Evacuated, Hazmat Team on Site

By James Steward

IOWA CITY, Iowa — An office building in downtown Iowa City has been evacuated after a law firm received a piece of mail that contained a white powdery substance.

Property Manager Marc Moen says an employee of the law firm opened the item Thursday and apparently called police. He says police evacuated the Savings and Loan Building on the Pedestrian Mall as a precaution until they can evaluate the substance.

Firefighters were also at the scene Thursday afternoon.

Each of the building's 14 tenants were evacuated.

The law firm that received the mail was not immediately identified.
