Iowa City Approves Hiring of New Fire Chief
By Gregg Hennigan, Reporter
IOWA CITY, Iowa – Iowa City formally appointed a new fire chief Tuesday night.
The City Council approved the hiring of Fire Marshal John Grier as chief of the 63-member department. City Manager Tom Markus announced Grier as his pick last week, but the council needed to give its OK.
Grier has been with the Iowa City Fire Department 21 years, including as fire marshal since 2007. He takes over from Andy Rocca, who retired in May after being fire chief since 1996.
Grier, who was sworn in at the meeting, became emotional as he addressed the crowd in council chambers, including when he thanked Rocca. He also thanked Markus and the council for having the confidence in him to do the job.
"I know I can do it, and I know I can do it well," he said. "I won't let you down."
His annual salary was set at $113,006.
