ANAMOSA, Iowa (AP) — An inmate serving a life sentence for the slaying of an Iowa Fall woman has died of an apparent suicide.

The Waterloo/Cedar Falls Courier is reporting that law enforcement officials found 34-year-old George Eason hanging in his cell at the Anamosa State Penitentiary with a bed sheet around his neck on Jan. 10.

Efforts to revive Eason were unsuccessful. An autopsy showed he died of asphyxiation due to suffocation.

The investigation into Eason's death is continuing but officials say foul play is not suspected.

He was 16 when he was arrested for the stabbing and suffocation death of 46-year-old Goldie Vallandingham.

The woman's body was found on her bed by her landlord in her Iowa Falls apartment.

Eason began serving his sentence in 1994.
