NEVADA, Iowa (AP) — The Story County Sheriff's Office says a 63-year-old county jail inmate has committed suicide.

The release says Mark Dubendorf was found a little before 8:20 Friday morning. It says Dubendorf had fastened a sheet around his neck and tied it to the closure hardware of his cell.

Neither jail staffers nor paramedics were able to revive Dubendorf. He was pronounced dead at Story County Medical Center a little before 9:30 a.m.

The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation will be helping the sheriff's office in its investigation.

Dubendorf was awaiting sentencing in March on a sex-abuse conviction.

Capt. Barry Thomas says Dubendorf had not been on a suicide watch.
