The city of Independence will compete in a nationwide recycling contest. It will represent Iowa in the SCJohnson Green Choices Recycling Challenge.

The contest aims to increase household recycling and encourage waste reduction.

Whichever community generates the highest recycling participation will win a $100,000 grant.

The six month challenge kicks off next Monday and the winner will be announced in January.
