Incumbents Ousted in Dyersville Election
DYERSVILLE, Iowa - It's out with the old and in with the new in the Dyersville city council. Some residents say issues surrounding the Field of Dreams played a role in the election outcome.
Alvin Haas said he's not sure that the planned All-Star Ballpark Heaven played that large of a part in his win to become Dyersville's next mayor. “I think it was a factor, I don’t know how big of a factor it was....I think it’s more of an issue that we definitely have to take a look at,” he said.
Three-term mayor Jim Heavens was beat by Haas. Haas was able to get 604 votes compared to Heavens 566 votes. Haas said he thinks he won the election because people are worried about the budget deficit and spending in the town. "They wanted to see someone put the break on and I tend to be a little more conservative,' Haas said.
Moving forward, Haas wants to develop a better relationship with the surrounding communities. He said he believes the downtown needs serious revitalization.
This was the third time Haas challenged Heavens in the mayoral race.
Incumbent Robert Platz was ousted by Teresa Bockenstedt in Dyersville City Council Ward 1. Also elected were Mark Wagner for At Large City Council and Ray Sauser for Ward 3.
