IOWA CITY, Iowa - Excitement is building ahead of a Tuesday night basketball game in Iowa City, which will feature the Iowa Hawkeyes and Michigan State Spartans. Michigan State is ranked #7 in the nation according to the Associated Press. The Hawkeyes have been given a ranking of #15 by the AP.
For years basketball had been on the decline in Iowa City, but a recent trend of good-play has brought fans back to Carver-Hawkeye Arena. During a game in January of 2010, just 2,521 fans showed up to support the team. That year students were also given free admission to multiple games, but attendance still lagged to a record-low, according to Gazette archives.
Tonight's game is one in a line of sell-outs at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Earlier this month the Hawkeye ticket office announced that the remaining home games are sold out. The average attendance of nearly 15,000 will be the highest season average in over a decade.
Hawkeye fans have also been taking to Twitter to declare their loyalty. On Tuesday one fan tweeted: "Don't watch much basketball but these hawkeyes have got my attention."
Another fan used twitter to announce his lack of productivity because the Hawkeyes are his only concern.
Iowa is a slight favorite at home, despite the difference in rankings.
