House OKs Amended Protective Order Bill

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - A bill that previously added pets to domestic abuse protective orders was amended by the Iowa House to also include property of emotional value.

The House voted 73-22 Tuesday to approve the measure, which now returns to the Senate for further consideration.

Original legislation from the Senate allowed the inclusion of pets in such orders to encourage victims to escape abusive situations without the fear that a family pet would be harmed. The legislation would give judges discretion to include property if a victim is emotionally attached to such items as well.

Minority Leader Mark Smith, of Marshalltown, says the change makes the bill too broad and creates "a tremendously slippery slope."

Rep. Bobby Kaufmann, a Wilton Republican, asserts judges can decide what can and cannot be included.
