IOWA CITY, Iowa - After a week of Hawkeyes and Cyclones talking smack, TV-9 couldn't help but wonder how much fans know about their in-state rival. On Saturday, TV9 hit the ped-mall in downtown Iowa City to test the knowledge of those watching the game.
Black and gold flooded the area, but cardinal and gold could still be spotted. Hundreds of people poured into the downtown bars and dozens stood in lines hoping they would eventually get in.
TV-9 first asked state fans what the name of the University of Iowa football stadium is and asked Iowa fans what the name of the Iowa State football stadium is. Both sides faired pretty well on this one, although a few answers sounded more like guesses.
Then TV-9 started asking about coach names, quarterback names, and former bowl games. Some had the right answers, others weren't so sure. In response to our Quarterback question we got the following: "It was Stanzi, but I don't know anymore," said Morgan Hambel, an ISU student. "I have no idea," said Kaitlyn Kobida, an Iowa Student.
TV-9 asked state fans what bowl game Iowa attended last year. "The Insight Bowl," said Ethan Bruning. "The Tostitos Bowl," said Krystina Olson. Those answers were followed by a lot of fans who didn't even want to take a guess, making Bruning the only state fan we found with the right answer to that question.
Then we turned the table and asked Hawk fans what bowl game Iowa State went to last year. "It was in New York, the Pinstripe Bowl or something," said Cody Foust. "The Humanitarian Bowl," said Jordan Beltramea. Foust takes the cake on this one.
Some fans asked to phone a friend, others told us they know the answer they just couldn't think of it. Overall, we call it a tie. But amid Iowa State's 9-6 win at Kinnick on Saturday, regardless of the answer given, those in the cardinal and gold enjoyed the victory that really matters.
