Greg Graver Wins Jones County Sheriff ElectionBy Addison Speck, Reporter
JONES COUNTY, Iowa - Jones County has a new sheriff. With 72% of the votes, long-time Deputy Greg Graver won the election. He was nominated by petition.
In May, the former sheriff submitted his resignation. The Jones County Board of Supervisors then appointed Harvey Desotel as sheriff in July. A citizen petition called for Tuesday's special election, which prompted four people, including Desotel, to run for the position. This was the first special election in Jones County since 1993. "There hasn't been a competition for sheriff in Jones County since 1996," said Janine Sulzner, Jones County Auditor. "It has just created lots and lots of interest," said Charlene George. George has worked elections in Anamosa for 40 years. She said she hasn't seen a turn out like the one on Tuesday. "This for a local election is just tremendous. We have had school bond elections that maybe run 1,400 people, but this is going to be something," George said. "There's just some people with some really strong feelings. One way or another," Sulzner said. More than 4,800 people voted in this election. More Good Stuff |
