Gov. Branstad Asks Obama for Help with Propane Shortage
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad has sent a letter to President Barack Obama, urging him to make changes to reduce the shortage of propane that has caused prices to soar in Iowa and other Midwestern states.
Branstad says in a news release that he sent the letter Monday in which he asked the Obama administration to encourage the Department of Transportation to expand an exemption that lets truck drivers work longer hours to ensure quicker propane deliveries.
He also asked that the Department of Energy reduce regulations to speed up propane deliveries, and that the federal government help the state if emergency deliveries of propane are needed.
The soaring price of propane has been blamed on increased use by farmers this fall and strong demand due to frigid temperatures.
