Funeral on Friday for Sen. Pat Ward
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Funeral arrangements are set for Sen. Pat Ward, who died on Monday after a three-year battle with breast cancer. She was 55.
The Clive Republican was elected to the Senate in 2004 when she won a special election to fill the suburban Des Moines seat vacated by Mary Kramer, who was appointed a U.S. ambassador to Barbados.
The Des Moines Register says Ward's funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. on Friday at Plymouth Congregational Church in Des Moines. The burial will be private.
Ward faced Democrat Desmund Adams in the November election. The secretary of state's office says Ward's name will remain on the ballot, but the votes will not be official. A special election will be held Dec. 11.
