Free Wi-Fi Comes to Iowa City's Ped Mall
By Gregg Hennigan, Reporter
IOWA CITY, Iowa – People in Iowa City's popular Pedestrian Mall area can now get free wireless Internet service.
Free Wi-Fi will help with the downtown's growth, Nancy Bird, executive director of the Iowa City Downtown District, said in a news release.
"An active and engaged workforce isn't sitting at their desks anymore," she said. "Businesses, community members and students alike need Internet access to check emails, research and see what's happening on the go. A strong wireless infrastructure is a must."
The Iowa City Public Library, located on the edge of the Ped Mall, provides free Wi-Fi that reaches just outside its building, but coverage is limited. Downtown and city officials hope to eventually expand the new Wi-Fi downtown.
The Iowa City Downtown District is paying the expenses and the Gazette Company, which owns The Gazette newspaper and KCRG-TV9, is managing the landing page. The Gazette is sharing revenue from advertising on the landing page with the downtown district.
The city of Iowa City, South Slope Cooperative Communications and Iowa Network Services Inc. also played a role in the effort, according to the news release.
