CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- Temperatures today will likely hit 100° all across eastern Iowa and when dew points around 70° are factored in, the heat index will be approaching 105 to 110. This is especially true is densely populated areas with temperatures in the city even sneaking a few degrees above 100°. The combination of very dry ground, full sunshine, and southwest winds will promote near-record temperatures across the entire Midwest for the next few days. An Excessive Heat Warning has been issued through Friday night due to the high heat in the area.
The heat will begin to break down by the weekend with highs on Saturday into the middle 90s, falling to the upper 80s by Sunday. A slight chance of storms exists this weekend with the passing cold front. Next week looks cooler, but unfortunately, still very dry. Much of the area is 4-6” below normal on rainfall.
