IOWA CITY, Iowa - Four people were taken to Iowa City hospitals after a collision with a semi on Interstate 80 near the Highway 1 exit Friday evening, authorities said.
According to the Iowa State Patrol, at 5:52 p.m. a car driven by Tanika A. Phelps, 27, of Cedar Rapids was traveling eastbound on Interstate 80 near mile marker 248, when Phelps attempted to merge from the left lane into the middle lane where the Interstate changes from three-lanes to two-lanes.
Authorities said a semi driven by David Delzer, 60, of Oconto Falls, Wis. was traveling eastbound on I-80 in the middle lane and struck Phelps. Officials said the collision caused the car to spin out into the median.
Phelps along with passenger Kiana M. Westerfield, 22, of Chicago, Ill. were transported to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. The other two passengers, Danita L. Westerfield, 25, and Denise L. Johnson, 25, both of Cedar Rapids were transported to Mercy Hospital in Iowa City.
