DUBUQUE, Iowa - The former Dubuque assistant principal accused of having sex and giving drugs and alcohol to a student got the maximum sentence. A judge sentenced Shane Oswald, 40, to 5 years in prison Tuesday.

The former Hempstead administrator took a plea deal last month. Oswald entered an Alford plea to sexual exploitation by a school employee. Prosecutors then dropped drug and alcohol charges.

Shane Oswald is back in the Dubuque County jail. In a very emotional courtroom Tuesday, the judge told Oswald what he did to his victim has ruined her life.

After interviewing Oswald, the Iowa Department of Corrections recommended probation and rehab for Oswald in lieu of prison time. Assistant County Attorney Chris Corken called that recommendation repulsive. She said Oswald should have known better, adding he is guilty despite the Alford plea.

Oswald told the judge he lost everything in the situation, including his family, career and home. "My home is moving into foreclosure, my car is repossessed and my bills are now in collection. I went from a world of options and hope to a world of despair and fear."

Oswald also accepted responsibility for his situation and apologized to students and staff at Hempstead for any embarrassment.
