Floyd County Sheriff Plans to Close Jail

  • Photo
CHARLES CITY, Iowa (AP) The Floyd County sheriff intends to close the county jail and send inmates to Mitchell County as a cost-saving move.

Sheriff Rick Lynch says five jail employees will lose their jobs, but the move should save Floyd County about $100,000 annually. Two employees would remain as the jail is converted to use as a weekday temporary holding facility.

County officials have been considering options for the 73-year-old jail on the fourth floor of the Floyd County Courthouse since a state jail inspector stated in October that it didn't meet the needs of the staff or public.

Lynch says it would have cost about $5 million to build a new jail. He says that compares to about $135,000 a year to house inmates in the Mitchell County Jail in Osage.
