Floyd County Might Fix Signage at Courthouse

CHARLES CITY, Iowa (AP) — Officials might finally be ready to put the "Floyd" back in the Floyd County courthouse.

The signage has simply read "County Court House" since at least the 1970s — though no one seems to know exactly when that happened — after work was done to prepare a leaky roof.

For years, various county supervisors have discussed reinstalling "Floyd" to the marquee, only to see those plans fall through. But recent renovations have officials discussing how to return the facility's full name to the building.

The county is replacing bricks on the building's east side and, as part of that work, the bronze lettering marking its shortened name has been temporarily removed.

Floyd County Supervisor Mark Kuhn has suggested forming a committee to make a recommendation on the sign. Officials are wondering whether to simply add "Floyd" to the current lettering or to restore the sign to how it looked when the courthouse was built in the 1940s.

Kuhn also said the board should consult with the county Historical Society and history buffs in the area.

"I think it's an issue important to a lot of people in the county," Kuhn said. "Let's put this out to the public a little bit. This is their building."

Board Chairman Warren Dunkel, who initially brought up the issue, suggested the board should have someone recreate the "Floyd" lettering using the current letters as an example. Then, construction workers could put the full name of the building over the new bricks.

Supervisor Doug Kamm suggested that the board include the lettering work into a project to replace the roof that's scheduled for next year. Kuhn agreed, saying that if the supervisors choose to do a retro look for the sign, they could do it then.

The supervisors are asking for feedback from county residents about what they'd like to see done with the courthouse sign.
