DUBUQUE, Iowa - One man died in an early morning house fire. Fire fighters responded to the 700 block of Calendonia Street just after 4:30 a.m. on Monday.

They found the house completely engulfed in flames and later found the homeowner dead inside.

Firefighters searched the rubble for a couple hours before finding the victim. Investigators say the severe damage is making it very hard to figure out what started the blaze.

“We have reports from some of the neighbors that called in that they heard smoke detectors going off but we have not found any in there as there was quiet a bit of damage in the house,” said Mark Ludescher with the Dubuque fire department.

Firefighters say they aren’t sure he the victim still owned a dog or not, but say they did not find any animals inside the house.
