Firefighters Identify Man Killed in House Fire
COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (AP) — Authorities have identified the Council Bluffs man found dead after a house fire as one of the home's owners.
Officials said Tuesday 43-year old Mark VanderWoude was found Monday after the fire destroyed the home in eastern Council Bluffs.
No one else was home at the time of the fire.
Council Bluffs Fire Chief Alan Byers says the fire's cause appears suspicious because firefighters recently investigated a gas leak there and an accelerant may have been used. But the cause remains under investigation.
Neighbors say the couple that owned the home had recently separated and VanderWoude hadn't been living there.
Pottawattamie County Attorney Matt Wilbur says VanderWoude had been charged with domestic assault for trying to run his wife off the road, and authorities suspected he had been stalking her.
