DES MOINES, Iowa - Des Moines fire officials said a man was found dead in an apartment on fire late Thursday morning.

Fire crews were called to the apartment in the 2200 block of Stanton Avenue in Des Moines at 11:25 a.m.

Fire crews said they found a fire on the first floor of the apartment building. Crews said they encountered heavy smoke throughout the apartment and fire coming from the bedroom.

Firefighters found the man dead in the living room when they searched the apartment.

The man was later identified as David Robinson, 65, of Des Moines.

An arson investigator was called to the scene.

The fire was isolated to the bedroom of the apartment, but the building suffered smoke and water damage throughout, crews said. The damage is estimated at more than $15,000.
