Fire, Explosion Damage Grinnell Impelement Business
GRINNELL, Iowa - An overnight fire caused more than half a million dollars in damage to a business in Grinnell.
It happened at the Grinnell Implement Store on Sixth Avenue around one Friday morning.
The fire caused explosions that shot flames high into the air.
Firefighters say the fire started in a storage shed, igniting oil cans. That caused several small explosions that woke up people several blocks away, including Andy Versendaal, who shot photos of the incident.
"You could hear it as it would hit the combines or whatever else was parked in that lot and the gas tanks were just exploding left and right. like i said it was an intense moment to hear and see," said Versendaal.
The fire stripped nearly 10 tractors down to their skeletons in a matter of minutes, and narrowly missed the business's main building.
No one was hurt.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but firefighters say it's not suspicious.
