COGGON, Iowa - Fire crews in Coggon and surrounding towns spent much of the snowy Saturday battling a major house fire in northern Linn County.

The fire broke out about 9 a.m. at a farm house at 998 Monticello Road in rural Coggon, about two miles east of the town and just off Highway 13.

Crews determined it began in the basement but are still investigating the cause. They say it does not appear suspicious.

Fire crews chose to let the structure burn out, which it did all throughout the afternoon.

The Coggon fire chief says an adult male and his 12 year old son were home at the time of the fire but escaped unharmed.
