BENTON COUNTY, Iowa - An overnight fire destroyed a home in rural Benton County. Crews were called to the scene of the fire north of Vinton around 11:30 p.m. Tuesday .

The man inside the home apparently woke up and smelled smoke. He was able to escape the home along with his pets. A fire chief at the scene told KCRG-TV9 he didn't have any information on any injuries.

The investigation into the fire on 54th Street, and a cause for the fire, is still not known and investigators say they may not ever know what caused the fire because of the extensive damage. The home was a complete loss, and all that remained Wednesday morning was the foundation.
