Fire at High School Stadium Called Suspicious
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Des Moines police say a fire at the stadium at East High School is suspicious.
The fire broke out late Tuesday on the west side of the stadium. It was found by officers who were patrolling the area and smell smoked.
Police say Wednesday that investigators believe someone may have entered the building before the fire was discovered. Police say witnesses reported two vehicles leaving the stadium parking lot just before fire crews arrived.
East High activities director Ric Powell says the fire damaged offices and locker and equipment rooms. Helmets, football pads and uniforms were destroyed. The field is OK, so practices and games can still take place.
East begins football practice on Monday.
