Fees Waived for Records Lost in Flood

DES MOINES, Iowa – Governor Chet Culver on Wednesday issued a disaster proclamation that waives fees for replacement copies of vital records and recreational vehicle registration documents destroyed due to severe weather and flooding. The proclamation applies in the 45 Iowa counties under state disaster proclamations from the series of storms that began on June 1.

The Governor’s proclamation suspends fees for obtaining a certified copy or short form certification of a certificate or record, and for a search of the files or records when no copy is made or when no record is found on file. A person must submit a written statement confirming that the original records were lost or destroyed in any one of the disaster counties as a result of the storms. The suspension applies only to replacement copies of original documents issued in Iowa, and may be relied upon by the state registrar or any of the county registrars in any Iowa county.

The proclamation also suspends issuance fees for duplicate registrations and title certificates for snowmobiles, all-terrain vehicles and boats, and for duplicate hunting and fishing licenses and hunter safety certificates, when the owner submits a written statement that the originals were lost or destroyed in the storms or flooding.

Residents in the following counties under disaster proclamations are eligible to have these fees waived: Appanoose, Black Hawk, Buchanan, Buena Vista, Butler, Cherokee, Clay, Clayton, Davis, Decatur, Delaware, Dickinson, Dubuque, Emmet, Fayette, Franklin, Hamilton, Hancock, Howard, Humboldt, Jasper, Jefferson, Johnson, Jones, Kossuth, Lee, Lucas, Lyon, Mahaska, Marion, Monroe, O’brien, Osceola, Palo Alto, Polk, Ringgold, Shelby, Sioux, Taylor, Union, Van Buren, Wapello, Warren, Webster, and Wright.
