Father Charged with Murder in Death of Son at Cedar Falls Motel
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - Authorities have filed a first-degree murder charge against the father of an 18-month-old who died at a Cedar Falls motel in April.
Daniel Reddout, 23, of Waterloo, was arrested on Monday. Reddout is accused of killing his son, Kaleb. Kaleb died on April 4 at the Midway Studios Motel in Cedar Falls. An autopsy was performed and the death was caused by asphyxia.
According to The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier, Cedar Falls Police Chief Jeff Olson said Reddout had been visiting people at the motel at the time of Kaleb's death. "Further investigation revealed the father had admitted to cutting off Kaleb's airway to try to get him to go to sleep and that caused the death," Olson told The Courier.
Reddout is being held in the Black Hawk County jail. He is scheduled to make his initial court appearance Tuesday morning. Jail officials say they don't know if he has an attorney and no records were found Monday for Reddout in online court records.
If convicted, Reddout faces a mandatory sentence of life in prison without parole.
