CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – A Cedar Rapids mom claims UPS Delivery stole her Christmas – literally.
Marchel Hubbard says her mom used the delivery service to ship a box full of gifts to her home. Hubbard says she knew it’d be a tough holiday and needed her mom’s help to put presents under the tree.
“She kind of took a weight off of me, because I couldn’t support a Christmas,” Hubbard said.
The box of goodies shipped from Chicago to Cedar Rapids on Monday with about 17 gifts inside and weighed in at around 35 pounds.
When the box arrived on Tuesday afternoon, Hubbard immediately brought the package inside. It was noticeably damaged and quite a few pounds lighter.
Hubbard opened the box to find more than half the gifts missing – only three coats were left inside. Toys for her three children, clothes, and a small laptop computer all gone.
“I was shocked,” Hubbard said. “Fifteen to seventeen gifts would not just get lost of out of the box.”
Hubbard says the entire package had about 1,200 dollars worth of gifts inside, and it cost around sixty dollars for her mom to ship the box from Illinois to Iowa.
“It just makes me wonder how many people have received a box with items missing,” she said.
TV9 contacted UPS to find out what might have happened to the Hubbard Family’s package and if they planned to investigated the missing presents.
Spokeswoman Susan Rosenberg from the Atlanta corporate office in Georgia says any claim of lost of stolen items are investigated. She tell us this is a busy time of year for the service with millions of packages shipped each day.
“We’re going to go on with Ms. Hubbard and find out more specifics of the situation,” Rosenberg said. “It’s very unfortunate and also a very rare circumstance.”
Until she’s told otherwise – Hubbard says she believes UPS is the reason her three children won’t have presents to open Christmas morning.
“It’s just the thought, if it doesn’t belong to you, you shouldn’t have touched it,” Hubbard says, “just deliver it. That’s your job.”
The Hubbard’s are asking for toy donations for their three kids: two girls and a boy. If you’d like to help, you can contact them directly at 319-265-8262
