Extra Patrols Help at West Des Moines Park
WEST DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Police say they evicted more than 500 people from a popular West Des Moines park this summer in an effort to make it a more family-friendly area.
The Des Moines Register reports police increased patrols and cracked down on alcohol use and other park violations at Raccoon River Beach in response to complaints that the area had become less child friendly.
Police removed more than 580 people for drinking on the beach, swimming outside designated areas of the lake and violating other rules. Officers fined three people for underage drinking.
West Des Moines police Sgt. Jason Bryan says the beach has "quieted down" and other park users have noted the improvements.
