DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A pastor who served as a Des Moines Police Department assistant chaplain has been arrested, accused of theft.

The Des Moines Register says Sherman Brown, 70, is charged with first-degree theft and dependent adult abuse by financial exploitation.

Sgt. Chris Scott says it's not clear how much money Brown is accused of taking, but it had to be at least $10,000 to merit the charge.

Authorities say Brown held power of attorney for a dependent adult man in a care facility. Police began investigating after the Iowa Department of Human Services reported suspicious activity with the dependent man's finances.

Scott says Brown resigned as a volunteer assistant chaplain when the investigation began.

A phone listed for Brown isn't in service. Online court records don't list the case yet.
