Eastern Iowans Have Information Stolen by Nationwide Insurance Hack

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Nationwide and Allied Insurance are alerting current, recent and potential customers about a recent computer network attack.

That attack has compromised Social Security numbers, driver's license numbers, and birth dates. The company believes the attack happened back on October 3rd. It might have affected more than a million people in the US. The Iowa Attorney General believes about 91,000 Iowans could be victims of this computer hacking.

A couple from Anamosa are on the list of victims.

Julie Thomas says she and her husband both received letters from Nationwide.

"With that much information, whoever did this has to be selling it," Thomas said. "What else are they going to do with it?"

In an effort to control the damage, Nationwide and Allied are offering their customers one year free credit monitoring and reimbursement for identity theft up to a million dollars. But Thomas says there's no guarantee the criminals won't act two, or even three years from now.

"My husband and I spent years building our credit. We own our own home, everything we have we own. We have no outstanding debt or loans. What'll happen to our credit if someone starts using this?"

If you are an Allied or Nationwide customer, you can call either of the 800 numbers below to find out what steps you can take to get a protection plan or find out if your information was compromised.
