IOWA CITY, Iowa - Eastern Iowa lawmakers are excited about the new legislative session, which kicked-off Monday morning with the bang of a gavel in the Senate and House chambers in Des Moines.

"It's exciting, every time," said Rep. Mary Mascher, a democrat from Iowa City. "We are ready to get back to work."

Republican Rep. Bobby Kauffman of Wilton said he has several goals and expects a productive session.

"It's cliché, but seeing that we can really make a difference up here, cooperating, and being not like Washington D.C. gives us hope and gives us energy," Kauffman said.

The session runs just 100 days this year and could be out be April.

"I'm feeling really good," Rep. Sally Stutsman, a democrat from Johnson County, said. "It's going to be a productive year."

"We know we have a job to do, and we are happy to be back at it," said republican Rep. Dawn Pettengill of Mount Auburn.

Lawmakers on both sides said a top priority will be laying out a budget.
