DUBUQUE, Iowa (AP) -- Consistently high temperatures and low rainfall this summer have brought record numbers of swimmers to Dubuque’s Flora Park and Sutton pools and an influx of golfers to Bunker Hill Golf Course.
Both pools and the municipal golf course reported record-high attendance numbers from late May through June.
Sutton Pool reported 19,946 swimmers during that time period, making it the second-highest June attendance recording since the city started keeping track in 1992. Flora Pool reported 37,419 swimmers, the highest one-month period ever since 1992. Neither pool has shattered any single-day records this summer, but both are experiencing crowded days on a regular basis.
Bunker Hill Golf Course began its 2012 season on March 13, several weeks earlier than usual because of unseasonable warm temperatures. Recreation Division Manager Pat Prevenas said golf round numbers are up this year nationally and Bunker Hill experienced its best June in 11 years. The total number of rounds played at Bunker Hill’s year-to-date through June is 14,408, which is 20 percent above last year for the same time period.
