Dubuque Racing Association Says I.R.G.C Helped Dubuque Dodge a Bullet

DUBUQUE, Iowa - When Members of The Dubuque Racing Association s learned Dubuque's two casinos would not lose money to a Cedar Rapids casino, they felt like they dodged a bullet.
Members of the Dubuque Racing Association say they too were very worried about what another eastern Iowa casino would mean for business back at the Diamond Jo and at the Mystique Casino.

One member of the board says the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission's decision may have saved the entire Iowa gaming industry,

Had the Linn County Casino come to fruition, the D.R.A. estimated Dubuque would have felt a 5 to 10 percent drop in revenue.

D.R.A Board Member Rick Dickinson says the Dubuque casinos are already under financial stress for two big reasons. First because of gaming expansion in Illinois. Second, Dickinson also says the Mystique Casino is losing $4.5 million each year because of the cost or greyhound racing.

Dickinson said, he believes they made the right decision for the Iowa gaming industry as a whole.

Dickinson said, "It may well have been the nail in the coffin, for at least a segment of gaming in Iowa. And in Dubuque in particular. "

Dickinson added he understands why The City of Cedar Rapids would want a casino in that community. But he says they've missed the boat.
