DUBUQUE, Iowa - An overnight car crash took the life of a Dubuque teenager.

The Dubuque County Sheriff's office say 18-year-old Justin Schmidt died in the crash.

Schmidt was a student at Dubuque Hempstead High School.

Police say Schmidt lost control of his car, and it rolled over, throwing him from the vehicle. He died at the scene.

The crash happened near the intersection of Old Highway and Sundown Roads.

Students and staff at Hempstead are once again dealing with a sudden death. The victim’s friends tell us he was a well known and well-liked student.

As students arrived to school this morning they began hearing rumors of a fatal car accident. During the early part of the school day, administrators confirmed those rumors.

Henpstead Principal Lee Kolker said, “there is certainly nothing common about a student death and I think no matter how many times people go through that, there’s always a lot of emotions that flow through the students.”

Kolker says students who were grieving where allowed to leave school today if their parents gave them permission.

School counselors spent the day helping students deal with the loss of their friend.
