Contractor Sentenced for Illegal Immigrant Case
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) — A Dubuque contractor has been sentenced to five months in prison followed by five months of house arrest in a case involving illegal immigrants.
The U.S. attorney's office says Thomas Kehoe was sentenced on Wednesday in federal court in Cedar Rapids on one count of conspiracy to transport, harbor and encourage illegal immigrants to live in the country. Kehoe pleaded guilty in April.
Prosecutors say between 2009 and 2011, Kehoe conspired to recruit and hire illegal construction workers as roofers for his company, On Time Construction. Officials say he hired as many as 20 illegal workers.
As part of a plea deal, Kehoe will forfeit assets and property traced to the illegal activity, including $150,000 in cash, three vehicles and a trailer.
