Driver Injured When Railroad Bridge Falls on SUV During Crash
DES MOINES, Iowa - A truck towing a crane hit a railroad bridge in Des Moines Friday knocking part of the bridge onto an SUV.
The crash happened about 3:50 p.m. at Northwest Second Street and Northwest 43rd Place. Second Avenue becomes Northwest Second Street north of Aurora Avenue.
When the crane hit the bridge, officials said part of the metal support beams were knocked off, and fell on the SUV in the northbound lanes.
Polk County Sheriff's Department spokeswoman Jana Rooker said a woman was inside the SUV and had to be rescued. A crane was brought to the scene to lift the piece of bridge off the SUV.
The woman was able to talk to rescuers after the crash, Rooker said.
The woman was taken by a medical helicopter to a Des Moines hospital. Her name and condition are not yet available.
Drivers are asked to avoid the area, which is two blocks south of Interstate 80-35 near the Firestone plant.
Rooker said the road could be closed for some time.
