IOWA CITY, Iowa — A major downtown Iowa City street will remain closed until Friday after a water main break late last week. Public works director Rick Fosse said necessary energy repairs are preventing a portion of Washington Street from reopening.

“Our hope is to have it open sometime Friday,” Fosse said. “That’s if everything goes well.”

Fosse said MidAmerican Energy is working to fix some underground damage caused by the water main break.

Officials have yet to pinpoint the exact cause of the break. The street is closed between Clinton and Dubuque Streets. Fosse said a damage estimate isn’t available at this time.
