JOHNSON COUNTY, Iowa - Investigators are trying to figure out how an SUV ended up in the Iowa River in Johnson County. Thursday afternoon someone noticed the submerged car near Greencastle Avenue NW and called authorities, who responded with a dive team.

"At this time, obviously an investigation needs to take place," said Dave Wilson, Johnson County Emergency Management coordinator.

The Jefferson-Monroe fire department from Swisher was the first to arrive on the scene and immediately attempted to check the vehicle. Firefighters were unable to confirm whether or not anyone was in the SUV.

Divers later determined that no one was in the vehicle and a tow truck helped pull it from the river at about 8 p.m. Nearly every window of the SUV had been broken.

"Our team didn't break any of the windows," Wilson said.

It's not clear how long the vehicle had been in the water. Only the luggage rack was visible when crews arrived.
