Des Moines Teen Arrested in Fatal Shooting
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A Des Moines teenager is dead and another is in jail after an accidental shooting that may have begun with horseplay.
The Des Moines Register reports that 16-year-old Corey L. Hamilton Jr. died of a single gunshot wound to the head shortly after 10:30 p.m. Friday. Police have charged 15-year-old Dontavius Rashaum Sharkey with involuntary manslaughter and reckless use of a firearm.
Des Moines Police Sgt. Chris Scott says the boys "may have been horsing around" with the gun before it went off. Scott says Sharkey told police that he thought it was unloaded when he pulled the trigger.
The shooting happened in a Des Moines apartment complex. Hamilton was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
