Des Moines Man Pleads Guilty in Murder Case Deal

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) The former boyfriend of a Des Moines woman who was killed with a crowbar has made a plea deal and has agreed to spend up to 60 years in prison.

The Des Moines Register says 19-year-old Raymond Benitez pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and willful injury on Friday after prosecutors lowered the charge. Prosecutors say he used a crowbar to bludgeon 18-year-old Judy VanLo in her bedroom on June 17.

Sentencing is scheduled for March 7.

Court documents say VanLo had told several people that she was pregnant and that Benitez was the baby's father.

The documents say Benitez told police he had talked to VanLo about having an abortion. He said he was moving to California and said "having a baby would ruin his life."
