Des Moines Man Gets Medals Earned in World War II

By Larry Burkum

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - An 88-year-old World War II veteran from Des Moines has finally received several medals he earned nearly 70 years ago.

The Des Moines Register reports Adrian Martin received three medals and a lapel button Monday during a ceremony at the senior living community where he and his wife, Martha, live in Des Moines.

Martin called it "much ado about nothing," but added that he appreciates it.

Martin served in the Army and suffered severe injuries in Germany.

After recovering, he taught school for 35 years.

Martin never received the honors he'd earned. His daughter looked into the matter, but her efforts were thwarted by a 1973 fire that destroyed millions of military records in St. Louis.

Martha Martin sought help from Sen. Tom Harkin's office, which resolved the situation.
