DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Des Moines' mayor and other officials say they don't like the idea of a casino complex in neighboring Urbandale.
Urbandale officials have talked with representatives of Fair Grounds LLC. The group is owned by Gary Kirke and Mike Richards, who oversee Wild Rose Entertainment, which operates casinos in Clinton and Emmetsburg.
Polk County officials say they doubt a new casino will be built, in part because they believe a public vote would be needed.
Des Moines Mayor Frank Cownie told The Des Moines Register that Iowa already has too much gambling. City Councilman says an Urbandale casino would cut into profits at the county-owned Prairie Meadows Racetrack and Casino in Altoona. Those profits are used to meet bond payments for the Iowa Events Center in Des Moines.
