DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A Des Moines couple have been arrested after police say they refused to let an animal control officer impound their dog, then resisted arrest.

The Des Moines Register reports that William and Naomi Shimer were arrested Thursday afternoon.

Police say they were called after the Shimers refused to turn over the dog to an animal control officer. Police say the couple cursed at and threatened to fight officers and that William Shimer shoved an officer. Police say the couple locked themselves in their house for a short time before surrendering.

The couple's grown son says it was a stray dog in the neighborhood that bit another person, not the Shimers' dog.

The Shimers could not be reached Saturday at their home.
